Scripture: "But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong." - 1 Corinthians 1:27 (NIV)
Devotional Thoughts
Rahab’s story is one of the most remarkable examples of God’s redemptive grace. By every human measure, Rahab was unworthy. She was a Canaanite and a prostitute, someone looked down upon by society, an outsider among God's people. Yet, her story took a different turn the day she chose to shelter the Israelite spies in Jericho. She made a decision to trust in the God of Israel, even at great risk to herself. And God, in His incredible grace, used her to become an integral part of the lineage of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5).
Rahab's story reveals how God takes people whom the world deems unworthy and gives them a role in His worthy purposes. It is a powerful reminder that human perspective is often shortsighted. Where we see failure, unworthiness, and brokenness, God sees potential, opportunity, and redemption. Rahab, who society labeled as an outcast, became a heroine of faith (Hebrews 11:31) and was honoured by being part of Jesus' genealogy.
God’s grace transforms the unworthy into worthy vessels. We can easily fall into the trap of categorizing ourselves or others as not good enough. We label people by their past mistakes or flaws, and even doubt that God could use someone like us. But Rahab’s story shows us that God's grace is more than enough to overcome our past and shortcomings. If God could use Rahab, He can use any of us for His purposes. Consider Nicky Cruz, who was once a violent gang leader in New York City. After an encounter with a preacher named David Wilkerson, Nicky experienced God's transforming grace, leaving behind his past life to become a Christian evangelist. His story has impacted countless lives and shows that no one is too far gone for God's redemption. No one is too far gone, too broken, or too flawed for God to redeem and use for His glory.
Practical Reflections
Consider for a moment the people around you who might be considered "unworthy" by society's standards. It could be someone who has a troubled past, someone struggling with addiction, or even someone who has simply made mistakes that have left a mark. Instead of writing them off, ask God to help you see them as He does—as someone with potential, someone whom His grace can transform.
Reflect also on your own life. Are there moments where you have believed that you are unworthy of God’s love or His purposes? Rahab’s story encourages us to let go of that mindset. God’s grace is powerful enough to transform us and our circumstances. He does not define us by our past but by the purpose He has for our future.
Closing Thoughts
God's grace is what makes us worthy. In a world that is often quick to cast stones and label people, God invites us to see through His eyes—to see beyond failures, flaws, and reputations, and to witness the transforming power of grace. God has always chosen the unlikely, the weak, and the unworthy to fulfill His worthy purposes. If you ever feel like you are not enough, remember that God’s grace is sufficient to make you more than enough.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your incredible grace that makes me worthy in Your eyes. Help me to see myself and others through Your eyes of love and redemption. Just as You used Rahab, use me in Your great plan, despite my past and imperfections. Remind me always that it is not about my worthiness, but about Your grace that makes all things possible. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
