Scripture: "But Moses said to God, 'Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?'" - Exodus 3:11 (NIV)
Devotional Thought
When God called Moses from the burning bush and instructed him to deliver His people from the hand of Pharaoh, Moses responded with words that resonate with many of us: "Who am I?" This question, coming from a shepherd in the wilderness with a past full of mistakes and a sense of inadequacy, is one we ask ourselves too when we feel God pulling us towards His purpose. The truth is, many of us struggle with this question. We struggle because we know our limitations, our flaws, and the failures that fill our past. We wonder why God would choose someone as imperfect as us for His plans.
Moses' response to God's call reflects our own feelings of unworthiness. We see our flaws and shrink back, listening to the enemy's whispers of past failures. But God qualifies those He calls. Moses was fearful and unsure, yet God promised to be with him every step of the way—and that is what truly matters.
Throughout the Bible, we see God using unlikely individuals: David, a shepherd; Gideon, full of doubts; Peter, who denied Jesus. Despite feeling unqualified, God used them. God doesn’t seek perfection but availability—He looks for those willing to trust Him.
We often magnify our flaws and ask, "Who am I?" But it's not about who we are—it's about who God is. He empowers and works through us. His strength is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9) when we surrender to Him.
Practical Reflection
Reflect on areas where you feel unworthy or doubt God's ability to use you. Remember, God is not interested in your qualifications but in your heart. He desires your willingness and trust. Breakthroughs come when we stop focusing on our weaknesses and trust in God's strength.
Identify the gifts or abilities you have, no matter how small. It could be a kind smile, an encouraging word, or listening. God uses the simple things in ways we cannot imagine. Offer what you have, just as Moses offered his staff, and watch God transform it into something extraordinary.
Closing Thoughts
When you find yourself saying, "Who am I?" remember that you are exactly who God wants. You are someone He loves deeply, and someone He can use powerfully. It is not about your ability but your availability. God delights in taking broken vessels and showing His glory through them. When we focus less on our flaws and more on God's ability to work through us, we will see His power at work. You are chosen, and you are enough because God is more than enough.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I often doubt my worth and wonder why You would choose to use someone like me. Please help me to see myself through Your eyes, as someone loved, chosen, and called for a purpose. Give me the courage to step into what You have for me, despite my fears and doubts. Let me trust in Your power, knowing that Your strength is made perfect in my weakness. Use me, Lord, in whatever way You see fit. In Jesus' name, Amen.
