“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” — Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)
Have you ever been in a rush, perhaps running late for something crucial, only to be stopped by every red light on the road? Each pause feels longer than the last, and with every stop, your anxiety grows. It feels as if the universe is conspiring against you. This everyday frustration is more than just a traffic inconvenience—it’s a reflection of the journey of life.
In our spiritual walk, we often feel this same sense of delay. We pray for breakthrough, direction, healing, or provision, but instead of green lights and open doors, we’re met with obstacles, detours, and what feels like divine silence. The “red lights” of life — financial strain, broken relationships, health issues, or spiritual dryness — seem to appear just when we need to move forward most. But what if those red lights weren’t there to hinder us, but to protect us or even prepare us?
Years ago, I had a red light in the form of ill health. I fell, and that’s how it all began. What started with urgent care quickly turned into emergency visits. I had to go on short-term disability. It was a season of stillness I didn’t ask for. But it was also a season of deep surrender. God used those moments to teach me reliance on Him—not on my strength, not on my plans, but on His care and timing.
Joseph in Genesis. God gave him a vision of greatness, leadership, and influence. Yet instead of a quick path to the palace, Joseph faced betrayal, slavery, false accusations, and imprisonment. It was delay after delay—red light after red light. But God wasn’t denying Joseph’s destiny; He was refining him for it.
Each delay in Joseph’s life served a purpose. It matured him, tested his faith, and positioned him for the very thing God had promised. When the time was right, God turned every red light into green, and Joseph moved from the prison to the palace in one divine moment (Genesis 41).
Where are the red lights in your life right now? Are there places where you feel stuck or delayed despite your faithfulness? These moments are hard, but they are not wasted.
Red lights can be God's protection — stopping you from moving into danger.
Red lights can be God's preparation — building something in you for the next season.
Red lights can be God's direction — guiding you to a better path.
Instead of seeing delays as denials, what if you viewed them as divine pauses? The key is to trust God's timing, even when it conflicts with your urgency.
Delays are uncomfortable, but they are not final. When you trust God in the waiting, He turns red lights into divine appointments. Keep your eyes on Him, not on the signals. Remember, He sees the whole road ahead—even the parts hidden from your view. Your destination hasn’t changed; it’s just a matter of His perfect timing.
Father, I confess that I often grow frustrated when life seems to stall. Help me to see Your hand in every delay. Teach me to trust in Your perfect timing, even when I don’t understand the reasons behind the wait. Like Joseph, may I hold fast to Your promises and remain faithful in the waiting. Turn my delays into testimonies and guide me safely to the destination You have prepared for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
