"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." – Psalm 34:18 (NIV)
There are moments in life when pain wraps itself around our hearts so tightly that breathing feels difficult. I was reminded of this recently while watching a powerful movie based on a true story. It portrayed the intense pain and agony of a family grappling with a heartbreaking situation involving one of their children. Their grief felt so real that it reached deep into my spirit.
Perhaps you’ve felt this too—the weight of rejection, loss, disappointment, or despair that breaks us in ways words cannot fully express. When life shatters us, our natural instinct is to search for answers, relief, or someone to blame. But often, we are met with silence or misunderstanding.
Yet in these moments, we must remember: though others may not understand our pain, Jesus does. He is the unseen friend who never leaves our side, especially when our hearts are broken. He enters quietly into the room when everyone else walks out.
Jesus understands pain intimately. In the Garden of Gethsemane, He faced anguish so deep that He sweat drops of blood. On the cross, He cried out in abandonment. He knows what it feels like to be crushed in spirit, and because of that, He draws near to those who are broken.
Hannah in 1 Samuel 1, was broken, barren, and ridiculed. Year after year, she went to the temple in tears. Even the priest mistook her sorrow for drunkenness. But God saw her. He heard her silent cries. In due time, He answered. Her brokenness was not the end of her story, but the beginning of a powerful testimony.
When you find yourself broken:
Acknowledge your pain before God. Don’t hide it; bring it into His light.
Sit in His presence. You don’t need to have words. Sometimes just being with Him is enough.
Lean into His promises. Psalm 34:18 isn't just poetry—it's a promise.
Let others in. Find a godly friend or mentor who can pray with you. Healing often comes through community.
Remember: Brokenness isn't failure. It's the soil where God's grace often grows deepest.
Life will break us sometimes. That’s the hard truth. But in those moments, when all you see is pain and rejection, remember that you are not alone. Jesus is near. He collects your tears in a bottle. He understands the language of your silence. And He will not leave you as He found you. There is healing ahead.
Jesus, I come to You with the pieces of my heart. Life has shattered parts of me I thought were unbreakable. But I trust that You are near, just as Your Word promises. I invite You into my pain, into the spaces others cannot see. Comfort me. Restore me. Show me that even in brokenness, I am held together by Your love. Amen.
