Scripture: Then the Lord said to him, "What is that in your hand?" "A staff," he replied. The Lord said, "Throw it on the ground." Moses threw it on the ground, and it became a snake, and he ran from it. — Exodus 4:2-3 (NIV)
Devotional Thoughts
Imagine Moses, a man who had fled from Egypt, now living as a shepherd in the wilderness, holding nothing but a simple staff in his hand. This staff was ordinary, a tool of his trade, something he used daily to guide sheep. Yet, when God asked him, "What is that in your hand?" He wasn’t just inquiring about the object; He was drawing Moses' attention to the potential within the ordinary.
God has a way of taking what we view as insignificant and transforming it into something extraordinary. The staff in Moses' hand became a symbol of God's power, turning into a snake and later parting the Red Sea. What seemed to be a mere tool for shepherding became a mighty weapon of deliverance for an entire nation.
What is in your hand today? It might seem small, unremarkable, or even insufficient for the challenges you face. It could be a talent, a skill, a resource, or an opportunity that seems too trivial to make a difference. But God specializes in using the ordinary to accomplish the extraordinary.
When you offer what is in your hand to God, you invite Him to work through it. Just as He empowered Moses' staff, He can empower your gifts, transforming them into something that brings deliverance, healing, and victory. The key is not in the object itself but in the willingness to surrender it to God’s purpose.
In the story of Moses, the staff became a tangible demonstration of God’s presence and power. Likewise, what you hold, when surrendered to God, can become a vessel through which His power is made manifest in your life and the lives of those around you.
Practical Reflection
Take a moment to reflect on what God has placed in your hands. It may be a skill you’ve honed, a job you’ve been given, or a relationship you’re nurturing. Have you fully surrendered it to God, trusting Him to use it as He sees fit? What might happen if you allowed God to take what you have and transform it into a tool for His glory?
Closing Thought
Remember, it’s not about the size or significance of what’s in your hand— it’s about whose hands you place it into. When God takes hold of what you have, even the smallest thing can become a mighty weapon of deliverance.
Prayer
Lord, I recognize that what I have in my hand may seem small and insignificant, but I trust that You can use it for Your purposes. I surrender it to You today. Use it to bring deliverance, healing, and hope to those around me. Help me to see the potential in the ordinary and to trust You to work through what I have. In Jesus' name, Amen.
