Devotional Thought
In Matthew 14:22-33, we read about Peter's incredible encounter with Jesus walking on water. This passage presents a beautiful illustration of faith, fear, and focus that resonates deeply with our daily spiritual journey.
Biblical Foundation
Jesus, having fed the multitude, went up into a mountain to pray. As evening approached, His disciples were in a boat fighting a strong wind. Suddenly, Jesus appeared, walking on the water towards them. Peter, moved by faith and curiosity, asked Jesus if he could join him. Jesus called out, "Come." And Peter stepped out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. However, his focus shifted from Jesus to the high winds and waves around him, and he started to sink.
Practical Reflections
Faith and Courage: Peter's response to Jesus' call demonstrates faith, courage, and a willingness to take risks for God. Are we as willing to step out of our comfort zones in obedience to Christ?
Focus and Fear: When Peter shifted his focus from Jesus to the circumstances around him, he started to sink. This teaches us the importance of keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus and not allowing fear or uncertainty to distract us from Him.
Relying on God: Peter's experience also underscores the need to rely on God in every step we take. Just as Jesus reached out to save Peter, He is always there to support and strengthen us when we falter.
Conclusion
The story of Peter walking on water serves as a powerful reminder that faith in Jesus enables us to do extraordinary things. However, it also teaches us that our faith must be grounded in a focus on Jesus and not on circumstances or fears. When we keep our eyes on Him, He will sustain us.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me have the faith of Peter so that I can step out of the boats and trust You. Grant me the courage to take risks for You and the wisdom to focus on You even when circumstances seem challenging. May I always remember that You are with me and will never let me sink. Amen.
