The Real Enemy
Scriptures: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” — Ephesians 6:12 (NIV)
Devotional Thoughts
It is easy to point fingers at those around us when conflicts arise. A harsh word from a spouse, a rebellious attitude from a child, or an unkind remark from a co-worker may make them seem like enemies. But as believers, we must look beyond the physical realm and recognize the spiritual battle at play. The Bible makes it clear that our true adversary is not human. Our enemy is Satan, who manipulates circumstances and people to cause division, strife, and destruction.
Satan’s strategy often involves disguising himself in the actions or words of those closest to us. This tactic is designed to shift our focus from the spiritual battle to human conflicts, thereby distracting us from addressing the root cause. Jesus demonstrated this understanding when Peter rebuked Him about His upcoming death. Jesus did not confront Peter but instead said, “Get behind me, Satan!” (Matthew 16:23). He identified the spiritual influence behind Peter’s words.
Recognizing this truth helps us respond differently. Instead of retaliating or harbouring bitterness against others, we turn to prayer, seeking God’s guidance and asking Him to intervene in the spiritual battle. The armour of God—truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God (Ephesians 6:13-17)—equips us to stand firm against the enemy’s schemes.
Practical Reflections
Identify the Source: The next time someone’s actions hurt you, pause and pray for discernment. Ask God to help you see the spiritual forces behind the situation.
Pray for the Person: Instead of lashing out, pray for the person’s well-being and spiritual freedom. Remember, they may also be under attack or being used unwittingly by the enemy.
Use Spiritual Weapons: Engage in prayer, study God’s Word, and declare His promises over your situation. Take your stand against the devil’s schemes with the full armour of God.
Guard Your Heart: Avoid harbouring unforgiveness or bitterness. These emotions give the enemy a foothold in your life. Ask God to help you forgive and love others as He loves them.
Stay Alert: Be vigilant and spiritually sensitive. Regularly examine your relationships and interactions, and ask God to reveal any area where the enemy might be working.
Closing Thoughts
Remember, people are not your enemies. The real enemy is Satan, who seeks to destroy relationships and derail God’s plan for your life. By staying spiritually alert and equipping ourselves with God’s armour, we can confront the true adversary and maintain peace in our relationships. Fix your eyes on Jesus, who has already won the victory over Satan, and trust Him to guide you through every battle.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for opening my eyes to the reality of the spiritual battle around me. Help me to see others through Your eyes and not as my enemies. Equip me with Your armour to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. Give me the grace to forgive and pray for those who hurt me, and grant me discernment to recognize the enemy’s tactics. Thank You for the victory I have in Christ. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
