Scripture: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” — Ephesians 6:12 (KJV)

Devotional Thoughts

As believers, we often contend with forces that tend to pull us away from God's plan and purpose. One moment, we feel propelled toward God’s purposes with zeal and clarity, and the next, we face resistance, doubt, or distractions pulling us away. This spiritual push and pull is not random; it’s a reflection of the battle waged over our souls and destinies.

God’s Spirit is constantly nudging us forward, calling us to live lives of purpose, holiness, and obedience. However, the enemy uses various tactics to pull us back, whether through fear, guilt, temptation, or complacency. Even our own flesh can resist the Spirit’s leading, creating an internal struggle. Remember, you are never alone in this push-and-pull battle; God's presence and guidance are always with you.

Consider the example of the Apostle Paul, who openly shared his experience of this push-and-pull tension: “For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing” (Romans 7:19, NIV). Paul’s honesty reminds us that even those deeply rooted in faith are not exempt from this battle. Sometimes, I wake up eager to serve God, but soon the enemy pulls me back with weariness, discouragement, and unmet expectations.

The key to overcoming lies in recognizing the source of each push and pull. God’s push will always align with His Word and lead to peace, growth, and righteousness. The enemy’s pull, on the other hand, brings confusion, compromise, and separation from God. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can discern these forces and respond rightly.

Practical Reflections

Closing Thoughts

Spiritual push and pull is a reality for every believer, but it is not a battle we face alone. Jesus Himself experienced it when tempted in the wilderness, yet He overcame by standing firm on God’s Word (Matthew 4:1-11). We, too, can find victory by leaning on the Holy Spirit, immersing ourselves in God’s truth, and persevering in faith.

Remember, every pull from the enemy can become an opportunity to draw closer to God. As we resist the pull of darkness and embrace the push of God’s Spirit, we grow stronger, more faithful, and more aligned with His will.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Spirit, which continually draws me closer to You. Help me to discern the forces at work in my life and to respond to Your push with obedience and trust. Give me the strength to resist the pull of the enemy and the wisdom to stand firm in Your truth. Equip me with Your armour, and surround me with Your love and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
