Scriptures:
“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” — Romans 12:18 (NIV)
“All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.” — 2 Corinthians 5:18 (NIV)
Devotional Thoughts
Reconciliation is central to our Christian journey. God desires us to live in peace—both with others and with Him. This process of reconciliation happens on two levels: horizontally with those around us and vertically with God.
Horizontal Reconciliation
This form of reconciliation focuses on restoring broken relationships with people in our lives. It requires us to humble ourselves, let go of pride, and take the first step toward peace, regardless of who was at fault. Romans 12:18 reminds us to live at peace with everyone, as much as it depends on us. This means we are to be initiators of peace, striving to forgive and heal relationships, even when it’s difficult. Jesus calls us to love our enemies and pray for those who hurt us (Matthew 5:44), showing that reconciliation is an act of grace.
Vertical Reconciliation
The second and more profound type of reconciliation is between us and God. The Bible says that we all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). Yet, God, in His infinite mercy, made a way for us to be reconciled through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Through Christ’s death and resurrection, we are no longer separated from God but brought into His family. Vertical reconciliation restores our broken relationship with our Creator, enabling us to walk in fellowship with Him and receive His grace.
Practical Reflections
Horizontal Reconciliation: Is there someone in your life you need to reconcile with? Whether it’s a friend, family member, or colleague, take a moment to reflect on how God is calling you to make peace. It may be difficult, but remember that reconciliation starts with forgiveness and humility.
Vertical Reconciliation: Take time to assess your relationship with God. Have you wandered away? Do you feel distant from Him? Be reminded that God is always ready to welcome you back. His love is constant, and through Jesus, we are invited to restore our relationship with Him.
Closing Thoughts
Reconciliation is not just an option for Christians—it’s a command from God. Both horizontal reconciliation with people and vertical reconciliation with God are vital for living a life of peace and purpose. As followers of Christ, we are called to be ministers of reconciliation, sharing the message of peace and love with those around us. Let’s make it a priority to seek peace in our relationships and to stay close to God, who reconciled us to Himself through Jesus.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for reconciling me to Yourself through Jesus. Help me to extend that same grace to others by seeking peace and restoring relationships, no matter how difficult it may be. Teach me to humble myself and walk in love, as You have loved me. Guide my heart to always seek Your presence and to remain reconciled with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
