Devotional Thoughts
In a world that often encourages us to live in extremes, the Bible presents a different and wiser approach—moderation. Living a life of moderation is a call to exercise self-control, balance, and the avoidance of excess in every aspect of our lives. It's an invitation to live in such a way that we honour God with our actions, desires, and pursuits, remembering that we are stewards of the lives He has entrusted to us.
Moderation is, indeed, a mark of wisdom. King Solomon, often regarded as the wisest man to have lived, said, "Do not be overrighteous, neither be overwise—why destroy yourself?" (Ecclesiastes 7:16). He understood that a wise life is marked by balance. Moderation helps us to make decisions that reflect the wisdom God gives us, ensuring that our desires and actions align with His will.
An example of moderation is found in the life of Daniel. When he was offered the rich foods of the Babylonian king, Daniel chose a simpler diet of vegetables and water (Daniel 1:8-16). Daniel wasn't tempted by excess or overindulgence. Instead, he exhibited wisdom and self-restraint, understanding the importance of living a life that honoured God even in seemingly small decisions. His moderate approach did not go unnoticed, and God blessed him with health, strength, and knowledge beyond his peers.
Jesus embodied moderation throughout His earthly ministry. Despite having the power to call down angels, He chose to live simply, to serve others rather than demand service, and to accept humble circumstances over material wealth or glory. Jesus taught His disciples that life does not consist in the abundance of possessions (Luke 12:15), reminding us that a life of moderation is of greater value than chasing what the world esteems.
Practical Reflections
Balanced Lifestyle: Are there areas in your life where you tend to overindulge? It could be in eating, spending, working, or even leisure. Ask God to help you bring those areas into balance, relying on His wisdom to guide you.
Contentment: Practice contentment with what you have rather than always striving for more. Gratitude and contentment are powerful allies of moderation, enabling you to live within your means without feeling a sense of lack.
Self-Control: Moderation often begins with self-control. Whether it is about managing time, emotions, or resources, learning to exercise self-control can help us live wisely and avoid unnecessary pitfalls.
Closing Thoughts
Moderation is a mark of wisdom because it reflects a heart that is attuned to God’s guidance rather than to the excesses of the world. Living moderately allows us to focus on what truly matters, avoiding the distractions that can lead us away from God’s purpose. As we strive to live a life of moderation, we position ourselves to walk in God’s peace and avoid the turmoil that often accompanies excess.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for calling me to live a life of moderation. Help me to walk in wisdom, exercising self-control in every area of my life. May I live in a way that reflects balance and contentment, honouring You with my choices? Give me the strength to resist the pressures of excess and to find true joy in the simplicity of Your presence. In Jesus' name, Amen.
