“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” — John 1:5 (NIV)
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Darkness often comes not with thunder, but with whispers — subtle, relentless lies that echo in the corners of our minds: “You’re not a good parent,” “You’ve failed again,” “You’re not worthy of love,” “You’re not enough.” These are not just passing thoughts. They are the targeted arrows of the enemy meant to pierce our identity and cloud our purpose.
I have had several of those moments — powerful and painful — when the enemy tried to convince me that I had failed. As a parent. As a spouse. As a believer. Those moments felt real, and the guilt felt heavy. But thank God for His Spirit within, who nudged me to check my thoughts against the Word of God.
And what did I find? Light. The kind of light that doesn’t argue with the darkness but disperses it completely.
Consider the example of Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1–11). The devil whispered lies, even using Scripture twisted out of context. But Jesus countered every dark word with the pure light of God’s truth. “It is written,” He declared, and the lies lost their grip.
Are you in one of those moments right now — where you’re weighed down by failure or fear, and those inner whispers won’t let go?
Let me encourage you: don’t accept every thought as truth. Check your thoughts with the Word of God. Is this thought building you up or breaking you down? Is it in line with grace, or laced with guilt?
Let’s bring the lies into the light:
Lie: “You’ve failed as a parent.”
Truth: “Love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8). Your love and presence are more powerful than you think.
Lie: “God is disappointed in you.”
Truth: “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1).
Lie: “You’re not enough.”
Truth: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
The Word of God is not just a reference book — it’s a sword, a light, and a mirror. It reveals what’s true and empowers us to reject what isn’t.
Every believer will face moments when the enemy tries to twist our thoughts into chains. But we are not defenseless. We have the light of God — clear, strong, and unchanging.
So, when the lies come — and they will — don’t sit in the shadows. Turn on the Light. Open the Word. Speak it out loud. Let truth flood your mind and heart until darkness has no place left to hide.
Father, thank You for the power of Your Word that shines in the darkest places of my heart and mind. I confess that at times I’ve believed the lies of the enemy — about my worth, my calling, and my identity. But today I choose to stand in Your truth. Help me to examine every thought and bring it captive to Christ. Let Your light dispel every shadow of doubt and fear. I am Yours, and in Your light, I see clearly. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
