Scripture: "Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes." - James 4:14, NIV.
Devotional Thoughts
Our lives on this earth are fleeting, like a mist that appears for a moment and then disappears. We are here for a brief time, and then we become a memory. What will you be remembered for? What legacy will you leave behind?
In Luke, Jesus tells the story of a rich man and a poor man named Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31). The rich man lived a life of luxury, while Lazarus suffered in poverty. When they both died, Lazarus was carried by angels to Abraham's side, while the rich man found himself in torment. The rich man had focused on his earthly possessions and status, neglecting to prepare for eternity.
This story reminds us that our time on earth is temporary, and our relationship with God determines our ultimate destination. It's easy to get caught up in pursuing possessions and wealth, but in the end, these things will pass on to others, perhaps even to people we don't know. Instead of focusing on the temporary, let us fix our eyes on the eternal.
Practical Reflections
1. Reflect on your priorities. Are you investing your time and energy into things that will last?
2. Consider the legacy you want to leave behind. What impact do you want to have on others?
3. Make the most of each day. Use the time you have been given to love others, serve God, and prepare for eternity.
Closing Thoughts
Life on this earth is short, but eternity is forever. Let us learn from the story of Lazarus and the rich man, using our time wisely and living each day with purpose and intentionality. May we invest in relationships, grow in our faith, and store up treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal (Matthew 6:20).
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of life and the promise of eternity with You. Help me to remember that my time on this earth is fleeting, like a shadow. Give me the wisdom to use each day for Your glory, investing in the things that matter most. May I learn from the story of Lazarus and the rich man, focusing on my relationship with You above all else. May my life be a reflection of Your love and grace, and may the legacy I leave behind point others to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
