Scripture: "One day Elisha went to Shunem. And a well-to-do woman was there, who urged him to stay for a meal. So whenever he came by, he stopped there to eat. She said to her husband, ‘I know that this man who often comes our way is a holy man of God. Let’s make a small room on the roof and put in it a bed and a table, a chair and a lamp for him. Then he can stay there whenever he comes to us.’” - 2 Kings 4:8-10 (NIV)
Devotional Thoughts
Hospitality is more than opening our homes; it’s about opening our hearts. The Shunammite woman in 2 Kings 4 is a powerful example of how true hospitality speaks volumes. Her simple yet intentional act of preparing a place for Elisha not only met his physical needs but also displayed her reverence for God’s work.
This woman didn’t just offer a single meal—she made a lasting provision. She recognized Elisha’s calling and took the initiative to create a space of rest and refuge for him. Without expecting anything in return, she gave generously, demonstrating a heart aligned with God’s kindness and provision.
Her hospitality eventually led to an unexpected blessing. Later in the chapter, Elisha, moved by her kindness, prophesied that she would have a son, even though she had long been childless (2 Kings 4:14-17). Her willingness to give without seeking a reward ultimately led to an incredible outpouring of God’s favor on her life.
Years later, when her son tragically passed away, her act of kindness continued to speak for her. In her distress, she sought Elisha, and through the power of God, her son was miraculously brought back to life. Her hospitality not only blessed her in the present but also became a testimony of God’s faithfulness for the future.
Practical Reflection
Hospitality as a Ministry – The way we welcome others into our homes and lives can be a direct reflection of God’s love. Are we willing to open our homes and hearts to those in need?
Giving Without Expecting – The Shunammite woman didn’t give to receive, but God honored her selflessness. Do we give freely, trusting that God sees our hearts and rewards in His perfect way?
Creating a Space for God’s Presence – She made room for a prophet, symbolically making room for God. Have we prepared space—both physically and spiritually—for God to dwell in our lives?
Closing Thoughts
True hospitality speaks a language of love, generosity, and faith. When we serve others with open hearts, we reflect the very nature of God, who welcomes us into His presence. The Shunammite woman teaches us that even small acts of kindness can set the stage for great blessings. Let’s be intentional in how we create spaces of hospitality, not just in our homes, but in our hearts.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of the Shunammite woman, who showed that hospitality is a powerful act of faith. Help me to open my heart and home to those in need, not for recognition, but as an act of love and service to You. Let my kindness speak of Your goodness, and may I always make space for Your presence in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
