Scripture: "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." - Psalm 34:18
Devotional Thoughts
Grief is a heavy burden to bear. The pain of loss can feel like a storm that never ends, a weight that never lifts. When we lose someone we love, especially under circumstances that seem senseless, it shakes us to our core. I remember losing one of my sisters to a sickness that, in my heart, I believed shouldn't have taken her. The pain was overwhelming, and there were days I thought it would never end. It felt as if the very fabric of hope had been ripped from my hands.
Yet, even in those darkest moments, God had not abandoned us. He was there, like a soft whisper in the chaos, like the sun slowly peeking through the storm clouds. It wasn't immediate, but He brought hope. He surrounded us with His presence, offering comfort we couldn’t find anywhere else. God is close to the brokenhearted, just as Psalm 34:18 says. He sees our tears and feels our grief.
God's promise is to heal the broken heart, not by erasing our memories or diminishing the love we had, but by walking with us, one step at a time, toward a place of peace. He turns our mourning into dancing (Psalm 30:11). The hurt may not completely disappear, but God has a way of transforming our pain into something redemptive—using it to deepen our empathy, shape our character, and draw us closer to His heart.
Practical Reflection
If you're feeling brokenhearted today, know that it's okay to grieve. God isn't afraid of your tears or your pain. He welcomes you to come to Him just as you are, with all the broken pieces of your heart. Acknowledge the emotions you feel—God is big enough to hold them. Allow yourself to lean on Him, and also on the community around you. God often uses others to help carry us through seasons of deep sorrow.
Take a moment each day to speak honestly to God about your pain. Just talk to Him like you would a trusted friend. You might also try journaling your thoughts, writing down the memories of your loved one, or the things you are struggling with. This can help release some of the weight that’s heavy on your heart.
Closing Thoughts
The journey of healing isn’t easy, and it often isn’t quick. It’s a process that happens day by day, often without us even realizing it. God is a healer, and He is close to those who are hurting. You may feel broken now, but know that God can take your brokenness and create beauty from the ashes. Let Him bring His light into your darkness. Hold on to hope—even if it’s just a flicker today, God will fan it into a flame.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, I come before You today with a broken heart. The pain feels too heavy to carry, and I don't always understand why things happened the way they did. But Lord, I trust that You are close, even in this darkness. Please bring comfort where there is sorrow, peace where there is turmoil, and hope where there is despair. Help me to see Your love and light even in this season. Heal my broken heart and teach me to trust in Your good and perfect plan. Thank You for being my refuge and strength. In Jesus' name, I pray, Amen.
