Help from Above

Scripture: "I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth." - Psalm 121:1-2

Devotional Thoughts

David, in all his glory, recognized that his help ultimately came from the Lord. Despite being a mighty king, with armies and wealth at his command, David knew that human strength is limited. He understood that true help, especially in times of great distress, could only come from above—from the One who created heaven and earth. When David was fleeing from Saul, moving from cave to cave, it wasn't his resources or allies that saved him—it was God’s protection and providence that kept him safe.

Who do you look to for help in your times of need? Often, we turn to people, resources, or our own abilities. But human capacity has its limits. Friends and family may support us, but they can only do so much. Even those with the best intentions are constrained by their human limitations. On the contrary, God is limitless. He can use anyone and anything to help us—even the seemingly impossible can become possible when we look to Him.

Years ago, I faced a situation where I needed money urgently, and I had no idea where it would come from. I exhausted every option I could think of, but nothing worked. Then, when I had reached the end of my ability, God provided in a miraculous way. Not only did I receive the money I needed, but it was more than I could have imagined. It was a reminder that God’s help is not restricted by human resources or circumstances.

Practical Reflections

Think about the challenges you are currently facing. Who or what have you been relying on for help? It’s natural to look to those around us—our friends, family, and colleagues. But today, God is inviting you to shift your focus. Lift your eyes to Him, the Maker of heaven and earth. Trust that He knows what you need and has the power to provide for you in ways beyond your imagination.

When we trust in God first, we open the door for Him to use others as instruments of His help, rather than placing our hope solely in people. Let God be your ultimate source of help. When David looked to the hills, he wasn’t looking to the physical mountains as his saviour—he was acknowledging that his help came from the Lord, the Creator who is above all things.

Closing Thoughts

Shifting your focus from people to God does not mean that God won’t use people to help you. In fact, He often does. But the difference is in who you ultimately trust. When God is your source, He will use those around you in the most beautiful and unexpected ways. Remember that God is limitless—there is nothing He cannot do, no situation He cannot change. Lift your eyes to Him today.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I lift my eyes to You. I acknowledge that my help comes from You, the Maker of heaven and earth. Forgive me for the times I have relied on my own strength or looked solely to people for help. Teach me to place my trust in You above all else. I ask that You guide me, provide for me, and use whoever You will to meet my needs. Thank You for being a limitless God. In Jesus' name, Amen.
