Have you ever found yourself in a quiet place, overwhelmed with emotions, as silent tears rolled down your face? These are tears that no one else sees—tears of frustration, disappointment, pain, or heartbreak. You may be struggling in your marriage, dealing with the challenges of raising children, facing issues at work, or enduring unspoken pain in your family. You carry burdens that seem too heavy to share, yet the assurance of Psalm 56:8 is that God sees every tear.
The psalmist David wrote these words during one of the darkest seasons of his life. He was fleeing from his enemies, rejected, betrayed, and hiding in fear. Yet in his loneliness, he found comfort in knowing that God kept track of his sorrows and collected each tear in a bottle—a tender picture of how much God cares.
Your tears are not wasted. Every tear you shed, whether in the privacy of your room or in the stillness of the night, is precious to God. He does not dismiss your pain or overlook your struggles. He records each one, not to keep a tally of your suffering but to remind you that He is intimately aware of your every hurt. Even when no one else understands, God does. He knows the secret tears you cry when words fail, and He draws near with His comfort.
Hannah, in 1 Samuel 1, cried out to God in silent anguish over her barrenness. Her tears were not seen or understood by others; Eli, the priest, even misunderstood her sorrow. Yet God heard her prayer, saw her tears, and answered her by giving her a son, Samuel. Like Hannah, God sees your silent weeping and will respond in His perfect time.
