Scripture: Matthew 18:21-22 “Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.’”
Devotional Thought
Forgiveness is one of the most challenging yet liberating acts of love we are called to as Christians. It is not just a one-time act but a continuous practice that reflects the heart of God. When we forgive, we are not condoning the wrong that was done to us but rather releasing ourselves from the chains of bitterness, anger, and resentment. Jesus teaches us that forgiveness should have no limits, reflecting His boundless grace toward us.
Unforgiveness is a heavy burden to carry. It weighs down our hearts and minds, causing us to relive the pain of the offence over and over again. But forgiveness, even when it is difficult, sets us free. It allows us to live in peace, unburdened by the wrongs done to us. Moreover, forgiveness is an act of obedience to God, who commands us to forgive as we have been forgiven.
Consider the story of Joseph in the Old Testament. Despite being sold into slavery by his own brothers, Joseph forgave them and recognized God’s hand in his journey. Through his forgiveness, he restored relationships and became a vessel of God’s blessings to his family.
Practical Reflection
Examine Your Heart: Is there someone you need to forgive? Take a moment to ask God to reveal any bitterness or resentment you may be holding onto.
Pray for Strength: Ask God for the strength to forgive, even when it’s hard. Remember, forgiveness is a process, and it may take time.
Take Action: If you feel led, reach out to the person you need to forgive. Whether it’s through a conversation, a letter, or simply a prayer, take a step toward reconciliation.
Closing Thoughts
Forgiveness is not just an act; it is a journey—a journey that takes us from the darkness of hurt and resentment to the light of peace and freedom. Each time we forgive, we mirror the heart of God, who forgave us at the highest cost. Forgiveness does not erase the past, but it allows us to write a new future, one that is free from the shackles of bitterness and pain.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the incredible gift of forgiveness that You have extended to me through Jesus Christ. I confess that I struggle to forgive those who have hurt me. Help me to release the pain, bitterness, and anger that I am holding onto. Fill me with Your love and grace, and give me the strength to forgive as You have forgiven me. May my heart be open to reconciliation, and may I experience the freedom that comes from letting go. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
