Introduction
In life, we are sometimes faced with things that seem insurmountable. They can be relationship issues, health challenges, or even financial struggles. Just like the people of Israel, these challenges want to rob us of our joy and make us question our existence. But what if I told you that there is a way to face such giants and emerge victorious? That's exactly what we're going to explore in this devotional.
The Case of David: A Giant-Slayer
You may know the story of David and Goliath from the Bible, but just to recap - David was just a young boy who was tasked with taking food to his brothers who were on the frontlines. As he walked by the river, he encountered a giant named Goliath, who had been intimidating the Israelites for 40 days.
Goliath was huge - over 9 feet tall! He was heavily armored and was not afraid of anyone or anything. The people of Israel didn't stand a chance against him. But then came David. This young shepherd boy saw an opportunity to save his people from this giant and asked God if he could face Goliath.
God's Answer
David said to God, "Lord, I have taken care of lions and bears for you, now let me take care of this giant!" (1 Samuel 17:36-37). In other words, David was saying, "I know I am capable because of who I serve."
And then came the amazing part - David trusted in God's power and not his own. He chose five smooth stones from the river and put them into his sack (1 Samuel 17:40). As he walked towards Goliath, he didn't shout or boast, but rather said to him, "You come against me with sword and spear and club, but I come against you in the name of Lord Almighty" (1 Samuel 17:45-46).
David faced the giant by:
Acknowledging God's presence: He knew that he was not facing Goliath alone. He had the presence of the Lord with him.
Trusting in God's power: David didn't rely on his own strength, but rather put his trust in the power of the living God.
Confessing faith: He declared before everyone what he believed - that the Lord was greater than any giant.
The Result
And then came the climax. David picked up a stone, and with one sling shot, he killed Goliath (1 Samuel 17:50). The people of Israel rejoiced because they had been given victory by their God.
A Personal Reflection
As you read this story, consider how you can apply it to your life. Have there been giants in your past that seemed insurmountable? Perhaps relationship issues or health challenges?
Remember that no matter what challenges come our way, we serve a living God who is greater than any giant. We are not alone; He is with us.
Prayer
Dear Lord,
Thank you for being my strength and my rock in times of need. I pray that I will remember Your presence whenever I face giants in my life.
Help me to trust in Your power and not my own. Give me the courage to confess faith like David did, and lead me to victory over any challenge that comes against me. In Jesus' name, I pray, Amen
