Scripture: "When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralyzed man, 'Son, your sins are forgiven.'" — Mark 2:5 (NIV)
Devotional Thoughts
Forgiveness is a profound act that often precedes true healing. As I shared the journey of forgiveness at a correctional center, I was deeply reminded of its transformative power. Jesus, in His ministry, regularly demonstrated this connection. Before physical or emotional healing, He often spoke words of forgiveness, addressing the soul’s deeper wounds. The paralyzed man in Mark 2 experienced this. Before he rose, walked, and found physical restoration, Jesus first declared, "Your sins are forgiven."
Why is forgiveness so crucial to healing? Because wounds of the soul, often caused by offences, can trap us in bitterness, resentment, and anger. Unforgiveness becomes a prison, stifling our growth and harming our emotional, spiritual, and even physical well-being. When we choose to forgive, we release the offender and, in doing so, release ourselves from the burden of bitterness. While this journey is not easy—especially when the offence cuts deeply—it leads to a peace that surpasses all understanding. It opens the door to freedom and enables God's healing touch to work deeply within us.
Practical Reflections
Reflect on Jesus' Example: Consider how Jesus forgave those who betrayed, tortured, and crucified Him. Even on the cross, He cried out, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing" (Luke 23:34). His example shows that forgiveness is not about ignoring the offence but surrendering it to God.
Acknowledge the Hurt: Healing does not come by pretending we are not hurt. Acknowledging the depth of our pain is the first step toward genuine forgiveness.
Forgiveness Is a Choice, Not a Feeling: You may not "feel" like forgiving, but it is a decision of obedience to God. Trust that, as you step out in faith, God will bring healing in His perfect time.
Pray for the Offender: This is perhaps the hardest part, but Jesus instructs us to pray for those who hurt us (Matthew 5:44). Prayer softens our hearts and aligns us with God's will.
Seek Support When Needed: For some offences, it may help to talk with a trusted counsellor, pastor, or friend. Sharing the journey of forgiveness lightens the load and brings perspective.
Closing Thoughts
Forgiveness is a gift we give ourselves. It is an act of obedience to God that opens our hearts to healing and freedom. Yes, the journey is challenging, and the hurt can be severe. But in surrendering it to God, we step into His light, where no shadow of bitterness can remain. Jesus, the One who forgives freely, walks this journey with us, offering strength, peace, and healing beyond what we can imagine.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, Thank You for the gift of forgiveness that brings healing to our souls. I confess the hurt, pain, and bitterness I have held onto. I choose today, by Your grace, to release those who have wronged me. Heal my wounds, Lord, and help me walk in freedom and love. Just as You have forgiven me, teach me to forgive others, even when it feels impossible. Let my heart reflect Your grace and mercy. I surrender this burden into Your hands and trust in Your healing power. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
