Scripture: "Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place." – Revelation 2: 4-5 (NIV)
Devotional Thoughts
The letter to the church in Ephesus is a sobering reminder that even a faithful and hardworking church can lose sight of what matters most—love for Christ. The Ephesians were commended for their perseverance and commitment to sound doctrine, yet Jesus pointed out a serious issue: they had abandoned their first love.
Have you ever been in a season where your passion for God seemed to fade? Perhaps, at one time, prayer was natural, worship was heartfelt, and serving God was a joy. But over time, distractions, routines, or even spiritual busyness can replace an intimate relationship with Christ. This is what happened to the Ephesians. Their work for God continued, but their love for Him had cooled.
Jesus’ response was clear: "Repent and do the things you did at first." Repentance is not just about turning away from sin; it is about returning to God. It is a call to remember the passion, devotion, and love we once had for Him and to rekindle that relationship.
Luke 15:11-32 tells the story of the prodigal son, who walked away from his father’s love in pursuit of worldly pleasures. Eventually, he realized his mistake, repented, and returned home. What awaited him was not condemnation but a loving father, ready to embrace him and restore him. Likewise, when we recognize that we have drifted from our first love, God is waiting with open arms, ready to renew us.
Practical Reflection
Evaluate Your Heart – Have you noticed a decline in your love for Christ? Ask God to show you where your heart has wandered.
Repent and Return – Acknowledge where you have fallen short and take deliberate steps to rekindle your passion for Him.
Reignite Your First Works – Reintroduce personal devotion, prayer, worship, and obedience into your daily life as you did when you first encountered Christ.
Closing Thoughts
God does not abandon us when we drift, but He does call us to return. If we have forsaken our first love, He invites us to repentance and restoration. His love is always within reach, and He is waiting to renew our hearts. Let us heed His call and return to our first love with renewed passion and devotion.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I acknowledge that my love for You has not been as fervent as it once was. Forgive me for allowing distractions and routines to replace my passion for You. I repent and turn back to You. Restore in me a heart that longs for Your presence, delights in Your Word, and serves You with joy. Thank You for Your unfailing love and for always calling me back to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
