Back to Yesterday

Scripture: "Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?" — Isaiah 43:18-19 (ESV)
Devotional Thoughts
Sometimes, we find ourselves longing for the past, looking back to yesterday—perhaps to times of success, joy, or even to regrets and failures. While reflection has its place, Scripture reminds us that living in the past hinders us from experiencing the newness God has for us today. When we hold onto yesterday, we can miss the blessings of the present and the opportunities of the future.
In Isaiah 43, God speaks to the Israelites who were stuck reminiscing about their former glory and deliverance. They needed to be reminded that God was still at work, doing something fresh and miraculous in their lives. In the same way, God wants us to focus on the present and the future, trusting Him to create something new, no matter what yesterday held.
God’s mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). If yesterday was filled with pain, He offers healing today. If it was filled with joy, He promises even greater joy in Him. We don’t need to dwell on past mistakes, lost opportunities, or even successes because His plans for us are ever-evolving.
Practical Reflections
1. Releasing the Past: Is there something in your past that you can’t seem to let go of? Whether it’s a past mistake, a relationship, or a missed opportunity, reflect on what’s holding you back from living fully in the present. Pray and ask God to help you release it into His hands.
2. Gratitude for Today: Instead of looking back, take a moment to recognize the blessings God has placed in your life right now. Write them down and thank God for His faithfulness in this season.
3. Focus on the Future: Spend time praying and reflecting on where God is leading you. Instead of longing for yesterday, ask Him to give you a vision for tomorrow and the courage to trust Him with the unknown.
Closing Thoughts
While our past experiences shape who we are, God calls us to look forward, not backward. Whether yesterday was filled with joy or sorrow, victory or defeat, it is in the past. What matters is how we respond to God's call today and the hope He offers for tomorrow. Each day is an opportunity to walk into the "new thing" He is doing in our lives. Don’t let the weight of yesterday rob you of the blessings of today.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being a God of new beginnings. Help me to release the past and not be bound by yesterday’s mistakes, successes, or regrets. Open my eyes to see the new thing You are doing in my life and give me the faith to trust in Your plans for my future. Let me walk in the fullness of Your grace and embrace each day as a gift from You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
