Scripture: "But Jesus came and touched them, and said, ‘Arise, and be not afraid.’” — Matthew 17:7 (KJV)
Devotional Thoughts
Fear is a natural human response when we encounter the unknown, the overwhelming, or the divine. In Matthew 17, during the Transfiguration, Peter, James, and John saw Jesus in His heavenly glory alongside Moses and Elijah. Overcome by awe and fear, they fell on their faces. But Jesus, full of compassion, touched them and said, “Arise, and be not afraid.”
This moment wasn’t just about calming their fear; it was about preparing them. The disciples had seen Jesus in His earthly form, but now they glimpsed His divine majesty. The revelation was overwhelming, but Jesus reassured them that they were safe in His presence.
How often do we face moments that shake us to our core? It might be a difficult diagnosis, an unexpected loss, or a step of faith that feels too big. Fear tells us to shrink back, to stay down, to give up. But Jesus’ words remind us: Arise. Stand up. Move forward. You don’t have to be afraid because He is with you.
These words brought great encouragement to me when I was overwhelmed by the issues of life and saw no hope in sight. I felt burdened, lost, and unsure of what to do next. But when I remembered how Jesus approached His disciples, touched them, and spoke these words, my heart found peace. His touch reminded me that I was not alone, and His words gave me the strength to rise again. If you are feeling the weight of life pressing down on you, remember that the same Jesus who spoke to His disciples speaks to you today: “Arise, and be not afraid.”
Practical Reflection
What fear is holding you back? – Identify an area where fear has kept you from moving forward. Is it fear of failure, rejection, or the unknown?
Do you recognize Jesus in your fear? – The disciples were afraid because they didn’t fully understand what was happening. Are you looking for Jesus in your situation, trusting that He is near?
Take one step forward. – Jesus told them to arise. It didn’t mean they had all the answers, but it meant they were moving in obedience. What is one step you can take today to walk in faith instead of fear?
Closing Thoughts
Jesus doesn’t just tell us not to fear—He gives us a reason not to. His presence is enough. He touches us in our weakest moments and calls us to arise, reminding us that fear has no power over those who trust in Him. Whatever you’re facing today, hear His voice: “Arise, and be not afraid.”
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your constant presence in my life. When fear overwhelms me, help me to hear Your voice calling me to arise. Give me the courage to move forward in faith, knowing that You are with me. Strengthen my heart, Lord, and remind me that I am never alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
