A New Name

Scripture: "Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it." — Revelation 2:17

Devotional Thoughts

Have you ever wondered what it means to receive a new name? Names carry meaning, identity, and significance. Throughout the Bible, God changed the names of people to reflect a new reality in their lives—a transformation that represented His purposes. Abram became Abraham, "the father of many nations." Jacob became Israel, "one who struggles with God and overcomes." Simon became Peter, "the rock." Each new name reflected a new season, new purpose, or a new identity that God was unfolding in their lives.

God is still in the business of giving us a new name. He sees beyond our failures, our fears, and our limitations and calls us something different. When you feel like a failure, He calls you "redeemed." When you feel weak, He calls you "strong in Him." When you feel worthless, He calls you "beloved." Your past does not define you, nor does the world’s perception of you. Instead, God calls you by a name that reflects who you are in Christ—loved, victorious, chosen, and set apart.

Just as Jacob wrestled with God, we too often wrestle with our own identity and worth. We may carry names given to us by past mistakes, circumstances, or even by others who have spoken hurtful words over us. But God, in His grace, desires to rename us—to redefine us not by our flaws but by His love and grace. To the one who is victorious, He offers a new name on a white stone—a symbol of a clean slate, a fresh beginning, and an identity rooted in Him.

Practical Reflection

Think about the labels you have carried in your life—labels given by others or by your own inner thoughts. How do these names compare to what God says about you in His Word? Take a moment to write down those old names, and then cross them out. Now, write down the new names God gives you: "beloved," "forgiven," "precious child," "heir to the Kingdom." Let these words remind you of your true identity.

Take inspiration from the story of Gideon. When God called Gideon, he was hiding in fear. He saw himself as the least in his family, but God called him a "mighty warrior" (Judges 6:12). Though it took time, Gideon eventually embraced the name and identity God gave him, leading Israel to victory. Like Gideon, we may not see ourselves the way God does, but when we trust His voice, we begin to walk in the fullness of who we are meant to be.

Closing Thoughts

A new name represents a new beginning—a step into the future God has planned for you. No matter what your past has been or how you see yourself, God has a new name and identity for you. It’s time to let go of the old names and the old labels and embrace what God has spoken over your life. His name for you speaks of hope, purpose, and a future. Will you listen to His voice and accept the new name He has for you?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for seeing beyond my weaknesses and failures. Thank You for giving me a new name that reflects who I am in You. Help me to let go of the old labels and embrace my true identity as Your beloved child. Give me the courage to walk in the newness of life and the purpose You have for me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
